Diary of a Shed
In which I, Nick Gisburne, having absolutely no experience (or talent) whatsoever, attempt to build a large L-shaped shed, about 16 feet x 20 feet, 13 feet high. After many months I've suddenly realised that I'm getting there, and it's not looking too bad!

To see if I'm likely to be working on the shed, take a look at the local weather for these parts. If it says sun tomorrow, I guarantee it will rain half the time!

Winter 2004 - Inside cos it's cold!
By mid-November it became clear that it was going to be way too cold to do any more serious work on building the shed until some warmer weather arrives in 2005. The shiplap cladding will have to wait, as will the electrics - I need to dig a deep trench for the underground cable and that's impossible when the ground is frozen solid. I also need to plasterboard the whole of the inside of the shed, which can only really done after the electrics have gone in. However, these are the only remaining major jobs, and I now have a fully functioning shed of my own!

I'll probably concentrate on building more trellis for the garden, on days when I can stand the cold, and maybe think about adding some internal storage - shelves, worktops, etc. It will be great fun working out what to actually do with the shed now I have one!

Last word for 2004
As with the shed, so with the electrics - I read a book and wired up the shed myself! Twelve double sockets, 4 lights in the two rooms (all individually switched, one with 2-way switching), 2 lights in the loft, 2 outside lights in the gable end overhang. I know they all work because I tested them with the (not recommended) method of putting a 13-amp plug on the circuit and plugging it in!

What I didn't do is connect anything to the mains - I've called in an electrician to do that, and it will all be completed early in the new year. However, doing the 'donkey work' will have saved me plenty of money - it would have taken a few days even for someone who knows their stuff. And I did enjoy the challenge of wiring up what turned out to be a pretty extensive electrical system. I'm pleased I've done it, and also pleased I got it done on 31 December 2004. Why? Because from 1st January 2005 it's now illegal to do your own wiring! Timed that just right!

Expect more from me in 2005!
