Diary of a Shed - 31 October 2004 < Back    Next >    HOME
Working like greased lightning I managed to do a good 75% of the right-hand side of the roof yesterday (30th). The cut-off point was where I couldn't reach without using the roof ladder, which I knew would take longer so that was left for Sunday (31st). It's a lot easier once you have a bit of experience - I already knew what the space between the shingles was, so doing the chalk lines was not a problem, and nor was doing the overlap in the valley. A great day's work, and although I only took one photo, when I'd finished, that was mainly because I was up there all day without a break!

Sunday and I forgot that the clocks went back, so I was up at 7.30am ready for action! After the success of the patented nailer thingy, Nick's 'Super-Sock Roof-Rub-Preventer' is now in the spotlight. Two wooly socks on the end of the roof ladder's hooks make sure that the shingles on the other side are protected! Today's pace was a lot slower than yesterday's. As well as using the socks to protect the far side of the roof, I had a tarpaulin under the ladder itself to stop any mud going onto the shingles I'd just put down - it's like a swamp in my garden at the moment, so this was 100% essential. So each time I fitted a shingle I had to move the ladder, move the tarpaulin, put the ladder on top of the tarpaulin, and so on. At least the weather was sunny. I needed 2 good weather days to do this job and I was lucky enough to get them.

I would have had time to finish the whole thing, ridge shingles and all, but I was one pack short of shingles so decided to break off to get them. Although I was quick, by the time I'd come back I'd lost some momentum and decided I'd had enough! Oh well, it will be a full day's work to attach the shingles to the ridge AND dismantle the scaffolding, so that's my target for tomorrow.

One day's work, and about 75% of the right-hand side of the roof is covered with shingles.
