Diary of a Shed - Shed Plans Next >    HOME
At present most of my plans are in very rough form, but I will be drawing them more neatly and adding more plans to this section eventually. However this may not now be for a while - my scanner was making clicking noises so I hit it a bit too hard and completely smashed the glass! It's now in the bin, so I'll have to get a new one before updating this section. Sorry!

Floor Plan
The squares (dotted lines) are concrete pillars, on which the whole shed will rest. The long, wide 'bands' which go underneath everything are 50mm x 200mm (2" x 8") 'runners' which lie flat on the pillars and support the floor joists. The floor joists, shown as the thinner bands, are 50mm x 150mm (2" x 6"). On top of this will be 18mm (3/4") WBP (exterior grade) plywood. Floor joists are 40mm (16") oc (on centre, ie the distance between the centre of 2 joists).

In case you're wondering why I've built the shed in 3 sections rather than 2, it's because I don't fancy lugging the whole of the floor round if I need to do some fine tuning with the position. I will be bolting these parts together, and where they join will be double thickness so extra strength. It also works better with attaching the plywood. As it's only one extra piece of wood (between the two sections at the top of this picture), the extra cost in negligible.

Joists will be nailed to each other, but screwed to the runners - the screws are necessary because when I jump around in there(!) the joists may flex, and if they were nailed to the runners underneath them, the nails might pop out and possibly also lead to some creaking. I could also use ring-shank nails, which grip the wood, and are what will be used to hold down the plywood sheets.
