Diary of a Shed - 27 August 2004 < Back    Next >    HOME
More delays caused by bad weather - apparently the wettest August since records began so I do have a genuine excuse for all the breaks! The scaffolding was moved around yesterday (Thursday 26 August) and only needed a few minor adjustments to fit at the side of the shed - a couple of bolts were moved to take into account the fact that the ground slopes up towards the house. It's all solid as a rock, and safe as houses!

Today it was time to put more underlay onto the other side of the roof, and after painting on the primer the first strip was pretty easy. The second strip was another thing altogether, and my neighbours were treated to a few swear words from on high! Instead of pulling off in one piece the backing paper kept tearing and starting new pieces, so after about a couple of feet I had a handful of paper ribbons to keep track of, and the more I unrolled the more it just wouldn't play the game! Eventually I got on top of it, but I was glad when it was done.

The only other mishap was me falling off the steps, only the small 2-step ones and I was leaning against the shed wall, looking up to nail the underlay under the roof edge, and the steps decided they were going somewhere without me. I won't mention unrolling the underlay and backing out of the shed, running out of floor and falling on my backside in the dirt because that would be embarrassing wouldn't it?

In the next thrilling installment, watch as I clamber up the magic roof ladder and trim off the rough edges of the roof peak, where the boards meet. Two more pieces of underlay to go and I'm done! Well that would be cause for celebration but I have only enough for one of those pieces, so I have to spend 28 quid for another pieces. It sounds bad but as the piece is well over half a roll I suppose it has to be done. Before I buy it I will try to see if I can put all the scrap pieces together and see if I have enough (well it won't be seen will it?!), but I'm not optimistic... just tight-fisted! I also need another tin of primer which is another tenner - why can't these things run out just as you're using the last drop that you need?

The scaffolding has a new home at the side of the shed. Now the neighbours can all see how dangerous it appears to be when I'm jumping around on the roof!
