Diary of a Shed - 18 May 2004 < Back    Next >    HOME
It's only day four and already there are four walls up! We had a little accident (read on!) but nothing major... hopefully. Yesterday (17th) was just too hot to do much and after the hard work at the weekend it was just me to do the work. So I decided that nailing down the front section's floor and trimming off the edge with a jigsaw was all I could manage, then at 3pm I went to bed for a lie down!

The next day (18th) was a different story and I put together the large main wall of the back section fairly quickly. It took about 3-4 hours for most of it plus some fiddling about with minor bits (is that too technical?!). Sarah came home and we decided we could lift it all up between us, and that was where the fun started! We did lift the wall, which was fairly light because the double header above the door had been left out, and the wall was quickly bolted into place. But then I had the bright idea that Sarah could help lift the header into place. Ooops! To cut a long story short, it got jammed and I said (jokingly), 'I'll just tap it and it'll fall down'. So I tapped it... and it fell down... on Sarah's head, doubly bad because it bounced and hit her again. She's okay but we won't be trying that one again. That was my fault entirely and we should never have tried it at all, should have waited for the lads at the weekend.

Another side effect was that there is now a dirty great dent in the floor, which shows how heavy the header was (4 inches thick, 8 inches wide, 12 feet long). Out with the wood filler! But the four walls of the back section are up, and next stop the front section!

View from above of the fourth wall as it was built on the floor, just prior to lifting it. Not the greatest view but it was tricky to get above and take a picture.
