Diary of a Shed - 16 May 2004 < Back    Next >    HOME
Day two of the building work, when it starts to look like a shed! 8-foot high walls but I'm happy to say that it doesn't look THAT big - it's not meant to be an eyesore or block anyone's light... although it's good that everyone will be able to see it of course! The weather was the only bad thing today - WAY too hot and by the end of the afternoon it was causing a few frayed tempers, things were being mislaid, and we were all getting tired. No hold on, all that was just me - Glynn and Craig were fine! At the end of the day we had all turned a nice shade of bright pink. Give me cloud any day!

Unfortunately my helpers had to get back home and won't be back for a week now, so the plan is to build the 'tricky' walls - the long wall to fill in the gap in the back section, and the entrance/window wall at the front of the shed - and leave them on the floor, ready to be lifted into place. The other two walls don't have any openings, so are straight up and down and can be built quite quickly.

All in all a great day's work, and I'm pleased that the plans on paper work so well in the actual shed. There's a lot more to do but so far it's looking very promising!

Unpaid workforce, kneel at the feet of your master!

By this point we'd nailed down the 6 boards which make up the floor of the back 2 sections, and trimmed off the excess plywood with a jigsaw. This is the first wall, which is a very simple frame with lots of identical uprights. Notice the small bits of wood around the edge of the floor, which give an extra hand when lifting the walls and make sure they don't tip over the edge. These are screwed in and can be removed later.
