Diary of a Shed - 9 November 2004 < Back    Next >    HOME
I've been inside the shed for the past 3 or 4 days, adding all the ceiling joists so that the shed has (a) a ceiling and (b) a huge loft. The scaffolding is now no longer and a lot of the timber I used to make it is now in the shed ceiling. I've made some great progress, and the back section is complete. I already had ceiling joists in the front, but I will probably put in some noggins because they stop the joists twisting. And I once saw Tommy Walsh saying that that's why you needed them, which is why you'll see so many of them in these pictures, in the back section of the shed.

I've made sure there's a hatchway so that I can get things up to the loft. As there is very little head room it was important that a lot of the area was accessible when you are halfway up the ladder, so it's almost dead centre in the L-shape. It's just over 2 feet square, so I can get the flooring up there (T&G chipboard, 8x2-foot, on offer at Wickes so I'll be ordering them soon!). I may not put the noggins in for the front section until I have a piece of flooring to hand, just in case it won't go up the hatch - it should, but the roof is only 3 feet above the ceiling so it will be a squeeze. If I leave out the noggins I can slide the boards up sideways if I have to.

I didn't really enjoy this part of the shed building, mainly because it day after day of hammering nails in, up a ladder, and just when you think it's going well you find a knot, it bends the nail... and so on! 4-inch nails don't come out very easily I can tell you! I need to work out how much plasterboard I'm going to need (a LOT!), but the next job may well be wiring up the lighting. So if you don't hear from me, I'll have electrocuted myself!

The cheeky boys aren't singing in the rain, but they had a big tea last night so they've done plenty of other stuff in the rain, as you can see. Douglas denies all responsibility and Ralfie looks away innocently.
