Diary of a Shed - 4 June 2004 < Back    Next >    HOME
Now it's really beginning to look like a proper roof! The ladders I bought were delivered yesterday (another day off because of rain and all-you-can-eat pizza), and as you can see from the pictures they are big uns! They have a very stable base, which was important - there is a whacking great metal bar about 3 times the width of the ladders themselves, and they really don't move when you're up there. Compared to my old step ladders which are like a tower of blancmange after 2 steps up, they're way, way better. You can also see that I bought a shelf which fits on the ladders, which is VERY useful for keeping the drill, hammer, screws and nails handy. I still try not to look down, but at least I don't have to cling on so tightly to the shed when I climb up!

I was still worried about the total height of the shed (remember 4 metres is the maximum allowed), but I measured from the very top of the roof ridge to ground level and it's 3.88 metres... so plenty of room, er, maybe not! With the roof now really starting to take shape, I'm getting very excited about the prospect of finishing the whole shed. It may still be far off but it's not THAT far off now.

Today's task: attach the roof ridge. First step, complete the gable end. The Aztec design doesn't look quite so bad now! Notice the slot at the top where the ridge timber will fit. You'll also notice that the rafters have 3 notches each in them. This is to hold some cross-pieces of wood which will stick out in mid air over the side of the shed. I can then attach rafters to them, making the gable end hang over by 30cm. You'll see that developing in a few more days.
