Diary of a Shed - 22 September 2004 < Back    Next >    HOME
The last couple of days have been spent hanging the doors in the frame. As usual, the camera batteries decided to pack up on the interesting bits so these pictures aren't in order, but I've tried to explain how I've got the doors up there. There isn't much else I can say except the doors look absolutely fantastic! Although they weigh a ton, you can still push them open with even a gentle push (one fingered). I still need to put the lock and handle on, so I've had to leave them wedged open for now just in case the wind bashed them about and pulled at the hinges. Just need that big window in at the side and it will be an actual usable shed! Then maybe I can FINALLY move all the dozens of packs of shiplap out of the kitchen and get some room in the house for once!

How the doors were hung (isn't that the name of a western?). First I drew round where I wanted the hinges and with the chisel scored around the edges. This is important because if you don't do it first, when you do all the chiseling you'll probably get splinters coming out of the wood around the hinge, which will spoil the rest of the door.

I've also chipped out the edge (left) because, again, if you don't do that you'll get chips and splinters. This way you end up with a very neat edge.
