The next job was potentially a tricky one - changing the colour completely with a wood stain. 'Autumn Chestnut' is the colour of the stain we chose (after a long discussion in Wickes), but with enough coats I'm actually going for something quite dark, sort of 'October Conkers'!
Staining the doors was a very hard thing to start because, having created something which looks so good, I could potentially ruin the lot if the colour looks bad, or if it was streaky or dried badly. So I stained a test piece first... and it looked bad. But Norm from New Yankee Workshop always comes up trumps when he adds more and more coats, so I did just that and with three coats on it looked great.
The actual process of staining the doors was easy and the stain appears to be oil-based and brushes on quickly. The first coat, unlike my test piece's, actually looks quite good - perhaps that's because I'm seeing it covering a much larger area.
I've been helped by the well-behaved Douglas today (Ralfie is on holiday with Sarah!), and unlike Ralf who disappears over the fence if you don't watch him, Doug is the perfect pet and has been sitting around chewing twigs all afternoon. Perfect that is if you don't count the pee/poo he still leaves inside the house when we come downstairs in the morning. He's still a pup though, and he's a lot better than he used to be. But be careful children because even cute puppies can turn into... Psycho Dog!
