Diary of a Shed - 5 September 2004 < Back    Next >    HOME
The only difficult thing about covering up the gable end (apart from getting out of bed on a Sunday to do it!) was making sure the two pieces were both cut from the same sheet of OSB. If I hadn't been able to fit the exact shape, I was planning to just cut some triangles and strips and add those together, but luckily the shapes were JUST okay and I got away with it.

To cut out these pieces I first measured the gap, then marked where the notches would be - these are notches for the timber which supports the overhanging roof. Do NOT under any circumstances raise the uncut board as far as it will go, then mark the notches on it from the positions of the roof timber. If you do that, as soon as you push the board all the way in once cut, it will have moved sideways. Instead I worked out where the board would end in the middle, marked that on the underside of the roof, and measured the distance to each of the support rafters. These marks were transferred onto the OSB pieces and cut out. I also made the board too high, so that I could then mark it once it was fitted into the notches and cut off the bottom for a perfect fit. If you try to measure and cut everything before you put it in place, I always find that something wasn't square somewhere so puts it all out. Much easier to cut things off than to fill in big gaps!

Two of these pieces took an afternoon, and I need to do two more at each side for the back section of the shed. The small gaps at the top and bottom will be filled with some small pieces of OSB, and the big gap is where the vent will go. I was going to fit that next, but as I have two more vents to make I thought it would be better to leave it out so I can make sure they all look the same.

One piece is already fitted, and the other has been cut out and is ready to be lifted into position.
