Still waiting for the wall boards and roof timber to be delivered, so today I decided to try to make one of the three louvred vents which will be placed at each of the three gable ends. This is easier than you might think, but you do need an electric mitre saw, which makes life a lot easier.

The vent is a simple frame (36cm wide x 50cm high), screwed together at the corners, but two of the sides have grooves like this which will take the sections of wood making up the louvres. To do this, I marked the start of each groove, 50mm apart. I set the mitre saw at 45° and set the depth of cut to 10mm. Then by making a cut, moving the wood slightly, making another cut and so on I was able to make a wider and wider groove, constantly checking the width of the groove by trying to slide my louvre wood into it. When the groove was big enough I moved on and did the other grooves.

The other side has identical grooves but don't forget that they will run at 45° in the opposite direction as you look at the flat wood - set your mitre saw to 45° the other way. Thanks to Norm Abram (New Yankee Workshop) for this method of making grooves - I've been waiting for ages to find a use for it!
