Diary of a Shed - 22 January 2005 < Back    Next >    HOME
I've done quite a bit more in 2005, primarily on the outside of the shed. The shiplap cladding takes a lot of effort to prepare because I wanted to stain it BEFORE adding it to the shed. Two reasons: I didn't want to stain it while it was on the shed because it's been freezing cold and it was much better to be inside the shed than out. Second, I could get a more even finish on the shiplap this way, and could also put one coat on the BACK of each piece, just for extra protection. As it turned out, the decision was the right one, and it's looking great. I've only done the parts of the shed you can see, again because it's so cold, and have now turned my attention to finishing off the front of the shed completely.

The shiplap goes right up to the top of the gable end. Notice the thin strip of wood right in the middle. That's because the shiplap only comes in 1.8m and 2.4m lengths, neither of which is long enough to go right across, so this makes the join neater than it would had I just butted two ends together. It doesn't distract from the overall look, and I use these thin strips quite a lot. The door has the same strips all the way around, as does the window (now covered with architrave), and they run along the edges of the walls. That made it very easy to attach the shiplap - neat edges which I could just fill with cut-to-length pieces of cladding.
