Diary of a Shed - 22 January 2005 < Back    Next >    HOME
I've done quite a bit more in 2005, primarily on the outside of the shed. The shiplap cladding takes a lot of effort to prepare because I wanted to stain it BEFORE adding it to the shed. Two reasons: I didn't want to stain it while it was on the shed because it's been freezing cold and it was much better to be inside the shed than out. Second, I could get a more even finish on the shiplap this way, and could also put one coat on the BACK of each piece, just for extra protection. As it turned out, the decision was the right one, and it's looking great. I've only done the parts of the shed you can see, again because it's so cold, and have now turned my attention to finishing off the front of the shed completely.

Currently everything is running from my extension lead, plugged into a socket in the house! The two lighting circuits have plugs on so I use them all the time, but the main power circuit (ie the one with sockets on it) does not because it's a ring circuit and I didn't fancy trying my luck with a plug on that. You can see the first of the double sockets, and there are TWELVE of these in the shed! It may seem like overkill, but I'm obviously not going to use them all at once and when I do need to plug something in I know there will be a socket not far away, rather than having to trail an extension lead around the place. The cables leading up and out of the picture will eventually not end in plugs but will of course go to the shed's new consumer unit instead.

All this is now in limbo while I wait for the electrician to wire it up to the mains. He has to wait until the electric board install a PME terminal (to earth the house more safely). And THEY have to wait because when they came to do it they found the meters were attached to an asbestos board so another company has to come and remove it! I just want my shed wiring up, guys, give me a break!
