Diary of a Shed - 22 September 2004 < Back    Next >    HOME
The last couple of days have been spent hanging the doors in the frame. As usual, the camera batteries decided to pack up on the interesting bits so these pictures aren't in order, but I've tried to explain how I've got the doors up there. There isn't much else I can say except the doors look absolutely fantastic! Although they weigh a ton, you can still push them open with even a gentle push (one fingered). I still need to put the lock and handle on, so I've had to leave them wedged open for now just in case the wind bashed them about and pulled at the hinges. Just need that big window in at the side and it will be an actual usable shed! Then maybe I can FINALLY move all the dozens of packs of shiplap out of the kitchen and get some room in the house for once!

Hinges added to the frame, with some hefty 4-inch screws. I didn't add the last hinge at the bottom just yet because I was using it to check whether the grooves on the doors were the correct depth. Just one more thing to remember if you only have exactly the right number of hinges!

I've added 5 sets of hinges here because of the weight of the doors - both doors are carried on these hinges, which is a serious amount of weight. The hinges are not spaced evenly because I can't have a hinge in the centre - the door is jointed in the centre so I can't screw anything into it. So the hinges at the top are closer together, which hopefully should work better because the weight of the doors will tend to pull the top of the door away, so more hinges at the top will reduce the chances of that being a problem. Maybe 5 hinges is overkill, but you can't have too many whereas you can have too few!
