In the First World War little, if anything, was known about "shell shock" and a number of British and other soldiers were shot at dawn for desertion. The truth of the matter more often was that they were so seriously affected psychologically that they did not know what they were doing when they "ran away". Many of these "deserters" did not receieve a fair court martial and there is now a memorial for these soldiers in England at the National Memorial Arboretum. Alan Booth Link to the original poem
Those who know me might assume I've posted a reading of this poem to show the futility of asking God for help in times of terror or emotional crisis. They might be right in that assumption.
